I wanted to post a quick note to express my condolences to the family of Senator Craig Thomas (R-WY).
I woke up this morning and checked my email, like always. And then I went to CNN.com, like always. I browsed the top news of the day when I stumbled upon the headline "Senator Craig Thomas Dies." I stopped for a moment and couldn't think. I was stunned and saddened. Sure, I disagreed with most of Senator Thomas' views, but he was still a person who shared a similar vision of doing one's public service.
Back when I was a Senate page, I had an opportunity to get to know Senator Thomas. I didn't interact with him often, but I do remember him being a sincere, humble man. Everyone seemed to like him. He never was out for the limelight. Instead, he quietly worked behind the scenes to advance his legislation. He cared deeply about wanting to ensure that the people of Wyoming had their voices heard.
In a day filled with so many other headlines, it easily got lost that Senator Thomas had left this world. The Senate paid tribute and then quickly continued doing its work. Other news stories came up and replaced the top headlines on CNN.com.
Even though other things have happened and will continue to happen in this busy world, I do ask you to take a moment to pay your respects to Senator Thomas. Sure, we may have disagreed with him, but we shared one common goal: wanting to make America a better place.
God rest your soul, Senator Thomas.
